Giving wood a 2nd chance
I make one-of-a-kind decorative pieces, or items that attempt to make a political or social statement.
I find my wood at recycling centers, local tree-removal services, from friends, and by the side of the road. It was headed for the mulch-pile, and I give it a chance to become a thing of beauty again. I’ve also been known to check 200 lbs. of wood on a plane when returning from vacation.
I am influenced by the Japanese, who revere the imperfections in nature, and so I often work with wood that has wormholes, or is spalted, punky, or rotted
This has been an unexpected development in my life, as nothing in my background prepared me for it.
